Starting Bluebiotech4Pain project!

Sea4us is starting bluebiotech4pain project!

The Bluebiotech4Pain project aims to unleash marine resources for the treatment of diseases through marine biotechnology: the development of a marine-derived analgesic for chronic pain treatment, through an industrial biotechnological production process.

Previous studies by Sea4Us have shown analgesic bioactivity from a molecule extracted from marine bacteria from Sagres, Portugal. The proof of concept revealed good levels of efficacy in animal models.

This project consists in the optimization of the biotechnological production method of such compound (or of its variants), while maintaining or even improving its bioactivity, leading to the establishment of a scaled-up production method and the design of the business strategy. It is essential for taking the Sea4Us’s analgesic program to market: generate material to perform preclinical trials and engage into a licensing agreement with a large pharmaceutical company, which will then conclude drug development.

The activities of this project include:

Activity 1: Biotechnological production optimization, supported by chemical synthesis; strain and fermentation process development;

Activity 2: Testing produced compounds by electrophysiology and in vivo assays for efficacy, as well as for other bioactivities and toxicity;

Activity 3: Scaling up the optimized production process to a pilot scale;

Activity 4: Filing of patents and designing the subsequent business strategy.

In this project, NOVA Medical School (Lisbon, Portugal) will focus on microbiology and growth optimization, SINTEF (Trondheim, Norway) will work on strain and fermentation process development and scale-up, UiT The Arctic University of Norway (Tromsø, Norway) will use its expertise in bioactivity and toxicity testing, and Sea4Us (Sagres and Lisbon, Portugal) will apply its knowledge of electrophysiology and in vivo assays, and also of intellectual property and pharmaceutical business.

Seal of Excellence by the European Commission

Seal of Excellence by the European Commission - EIC Accelerator call

At the last SME Instrument / EIC Accelerator call, Sea4Us was awarded a Seal of Excellence by the European Commission.

The SME Instrument is part of the European Innovation Council pilot (EIC pilot). This was launched on 27th October 2017 as part of the Horizon 2020 Work programme 2018-2020, when the SME Instrument, the Fast Track to Innovation (FTI), Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Open and Horizon Prizes, were brought under the EIC pilot umbrella, to provide a “one stop shop” for funding of innovators/innovations in the EU. Thus, this program aims to meet the financing needs of SMEs oriented towards internationalization and, in particular, young entrepreneurs in the implementation of innovative ideas of high potential.

SME Instrument is divided into three phases: Phase 1 aims to assess the technological, technical and economic viability of the project through a donation of 50,000 euros; Phase 2 (now named Accelerator) supports the development of the innovation project and can finance between EUR 500 000 and 2.5 million and Phase 3 is aimed at supporting the market.

The “Seal of Excellence” is a quality label awarded to project proposals submitted for funding under the Research and Innovation category of the Horizon 2020 Strategy. It is given to those projects that have been able to pass all the rigorous selection and award criteria of the evaluation Horizon 2020.

After being awarded a Seal of Excellence by the European Commission at the last SME Instruments Phase 1 call, the project proposal 954819, Sea4Pain2Market Novel analgesic for chronic pain from marine-derived compounds, submitted under the Horizon 2020’s SME Instrument (grant only and blended finance) call H2020-EIC-SMEInst-2018-2020 (H2020-EIC-SMEInst-2018-2020-3) of 8 January 2020 in the area of EIC-SMEInst-2018-2020 supporting SMEs efforts for the development, deployment and market replication of innovative solutions for blue growth by following evaluation by an international panel of independent experts was scored as a high-quality project proposal in a highly competitive evaluation process*.

* This means passing all stringent Horizon 2020 assessment thresholds for the 3 award criteria (excellence, impact, quality, and efficiency of implementation) required to receive funding from the EU budget Horizon 2020.

BLUE BIO VALUE 2020 – The world needs your sustainable solutions now, more than ever

Covid-19 does not stop us from working to design a better future – Blue Bio Value accelerator is prepared to conduct a fully remote experience if needed to safeguard the well-being of startups, mentors and partners.

Blue Bio Value is a business program dedicated to the blue bioeconomy focused on scaling up marine biobased solutions to global market applications in different industries, resorting to science-based and biotech innovations, while helping to tackle important societal challenges.

2020 brought its own challenges so this year, Blue Bio Value is doing thing a bit different:
2020 we will start with a new concept for Blue Bio Value – the 1st Edition of Blue Bio Value Ideation Program (from March to April) in many locations in Portugal (check timeline and locations info) and on the second half of the year we will have our 3rd Edition of the Blue Bio Value Acceleration Program.
