The European Maritime Day is the annual EU meeting point on maritime affairs and blue growth. It targets maritime professionals, entrepreneurs and ocean leaders from businesses, governments, public institutions, NGOs and academia. The focus of the European Maritime Day 2019 in Lisbon, Portugal, is on blue entrepreneurship, research, innovation and investment to transform traditional maritime sectors and boost emerging technologies and value chains.
Sea4us will be present in the European Maritime Day Conference between the 16th and 17th of May.
Heloísa Tessaroli, Nuno Leitão and Susana Antunes.
Importantly, tomorrow (May 17), our marine biotechnologist Sílvia Lino will be presenting a short pitch about Blue4Pain. The pitching session starts at 10h45 and it gathers 8 pioneer entities that present innovative solutions within the blue economy.
So let’s dance along the waves and celebrate all things maritime as well as the gift our seas and oceans provide, from the oxygen we breathe, to the fish we eat, to the inspiration that shapes our culture and moves our bards and poets!
Sea4Us is going to be present at NeuPSIG 2019, an international forum on neuropathic pain that this year takes place in London, from May 9 to May 11, 2019. This meeting is an excellent opportunity to network and strengthen scientific collaborations. Sea4Us is sending two research scentists – Ana Rosa and Miguel – to present the latest research and developments in understanding the mechanisms, evaluation, prevention and treatment of neuropathic pain.

Project approved for funding under the SME Instrument – Phase 1
On March 23rd, 2018, our project, Sea4Pain, was approved for funding under the SME Instrument – Phase 1!
Title of project “Development of a novel analgesic for chronic pain from marine-derived compounds”
Acronym “Sea4Pain”
Abstract The project now approved aims to define the development strategy of Sea4Us platform for the discovery and development of new drugs of marine origin (Portuguese). In particular, regarding the project to develop a new analgesic for moderate to severe chronic pain of high efficacy, with reduced toxicity and limited side effects, giving rise to a new class of drugs. The Sea4Pain project will allow defining the next steps in drug development, including clinical trials. To this end, Sea4Us will establish new partnerships, update the business plan and prepare the next phases of investment.
Chronic pain Currently, 21% of the world’s population suffers from chronic pain and the Sea4Pain project will contribute to the development of alternative treatments for patients suffering from moderate to severe chronic pain. Medications currently on the market (opioid derivatives and others) relieve pain, but they co-inflict many adverse side effects (including habituation and addiction) and great loss of quality of life.
Since the end of February and during the next 2 months we count with the presence of Giovanna Romano at Sea4Us. Giovanna is a Researcher from the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station, Italy. The visit of this scientist, specialist in chemical ecology and marine biotechnology, is concerning the Ocean Medicines project, a Marie Curie RISE project that provides close contact between academic institutions and companies in Europe.
We hope to test the analgesic potential of extracts of marine microorganisms grown in the laboratory by Giovanna’s research group in the models developed by Sea4Us. On the other hand, it is a privilege to be able to count on Giovanna’s experience in the production of marine natural compounds and the isolation of bioactive substances here at our laboratory.
