NOVA Medical School had their annual Open Day for students in the last year of high school. This is always a great way to students to know the university, its academic programme and environment.
The Sea4Us’s Physiology lab was open to talk about our research to future scientists and doctors! We had the opportunity to present some of our most promising results under the Mar4Pain project (which is co-financed by CRESC ALGARVE 2020, Portugal 2020, Lisboa2020 and the European Commission).
Today, the 28th of April of 2017, there is an event to promote the Mar4Pain project on the “II Seminar Potentialities of a Municipality” at the Auditorium of the Vila do Bispo Cultural Center, dedicated the theme “The Sea of Vila do Bispo”, for which Sea4Us was invited to participate.
Sea4Us was represented by its co-founder, CEO and CSO, Pedro Lima, who presented a panel on “Sponges of Sagres and Biotechnology” at 2:30 p.m. at the “III Panel – Biodiversity”, linking the Vila do Bispo to the treatment of chronic pain. Particular emphasis was given to the project on a substance from a marine sponge collected in the waters of Sagres that has the potential to become an alternative to morphine in the treatment of chronic pain, a devastating syndrome that affects 21% of the human population.
Our researcher, Silvia Lino, is a seconded researcher of the Ocean Medicines project.
She is spending 2 months of secondment at the The Arctic University of Norway (UiT), in Tromsø, Norway, learning how to chemically isolate and identify novel marine bioactive compounds.

Sea4Us organized the first Ocean Medicines‘s Midterm Meeting, which took place at NOVA Medical School on the 3rd and 4th of April. The seconded researchers shared with all partners their experiences to date of this amazing project.
Sea4Us was interviewed late last year in our HeadQuarters at Sagres by Agência Lusa about one of our pipelines of research and development – Chronic Pain alternative therapeutics. We are closer and closer each day to conquer our goal.

One of our researchers, Beatriz Szwarc, was awarded with best Poster Presentation in Basic Research of the Fundação Astrazeneca Innovate Competition at the iMed 8.0 Lisbon 2016 conference!
She presented about Sea4Us progress on finding specific mechanisms of neuropathic chronic pain. With this information, we know what is impaired in this devastating disease. We are positive we have the tools to revert it back into physiologic conditions. Every day we get one step closer!

Emiliana Tortorella is a researcher from the Istituto di Biochimica delle Proteine del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (IBP-CNR), Naples, Italy. Emiliana is spending the next 2 months in our laboratory in Lisbon in the context of the Ocean Medicines project, in which Sea4Us participates. She will learn how to work with eukaryotic cells and how to test the toxicity of new compounds isolated from marine microorganisms.

Sea4Us scientist, Marisa Sousa, is one of the participants at the Photographic Exhibition “30 anos, 30 fotografias, 30 cientistas” (“30 years, 30 photographs, 30 scientists”). This exhibition aims to showcase the work of 30 women, researchers from different generations, that have contributed to the protection and study of the oceans.
The exhibition is for everyone, including schools, children, adolescents, university students, scientists and families.
