Sea4Us was represented by COO Filipe Vilas-Boas as an invited speaker at the Fórum de Engenharia Química e Biológica (iFEQB) (“Chemical and Biological Engineering Forum”) that took place at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL), the 18th and 19th of May, 2016.
iFEQB is a project created by ISEL students that aims to show the work developed in companies and research centres of Chemistry, Biochemistru and Environment.

The Luso-Belgian-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce is organizing a seminar regarding “The BLUE Economy – marine bioresources value chain in Portugal” in the 10th of May, 2016 at 9am the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Lisbon.
Sea4Us is taking part in this event as our COO Filipe Vilas-Boas was invited to be a speaker. His presentation will focus on the treatment of chronic pain utilizing the portuguese sea (title: “Do mar Português ao tratamento da dor crónica”).

Sea4Us received Filipa de Sousa in behalf of NOVA Magazine to talk about the collaboration we maintain with NOVA Medical School. That afternoon Pedro Lima – the CSO of Sea4Us -, André Bastos and Beatriz Szwarc – researchers at Sea4Us -, took her to see the laboratories and s0me experiments we were carrying out at the time.
The notion of responsibility accompanies the daily life of those who work here, but “it is a very natural environment,” André Bastos comments, revealing what it is like to work in a company that could be the source of a breakthrough for chronic pain relief, a disease that causes discomfort to so many people.

Ocean Medicines is a network of academic, research centres and SMEs across Europe, with proven experience in higher education, training and endowed with state-of-the art scientific and technical expertise and infrastructures.
Its aim is to establish a network of collaboration and knowledge-exchange between industrial and academic partners to further develop lead compounds from marine microorganisms having anticancer or anti-infective effects that have already been identified by the consortium. To achieve this goal a mobility programme was set up to prepare a new generation of marine biodiscovery scientists that will be trained on how to isolate compounds from bioactive bacteria/microalgae and take these through to semi-industrial scale-up for further development and toxicity testing at the pre-clinical level. The Ocean Medicines programme also considers commercialization, innovation and entrepreneurship activities including how to start a new business and how to favour an industrial career to seconded researchers.
The Ocean Medicine’s kick off meeting was in the past 6th of April, 2016 in Naples, Italy. Sea4Us was represented by one of our scientific researchers, Silvia Lino, and our CFO, Nuno Leitão.
Sea4Us was present at an Euromarine workshop in Naples, Italy, on the 4th and 5th of April, 2016. Euromarine is a network of European partners whose aim is to promote a multidisciplinary approach to the marine sciences. Under the theme Exploitation and legal aspects on marine genetics and chemical resources, the main universities, institutes and companies operating in the sector in Europe were present.
This workshop focused on the exploitation of marine genetic and chemical resources, sustainable production of bioactive compounds from the sea, legal issues on marine resources exploitation and the preclinical testing of bioactive compounds for therapeutic applications. 58 participants from 11 European countries attended, with 28 speakers from 10 different EU countries focusing on exploring bioactive compounds from marine microbial sources as efficient alternative therapies to modern pharmacology. The meeting brought together scientists from a range of backgrounds in order to explore and foresee new scenarios in marine biotechnology, and create new collaborations and funding opportunities in the framework of Horizon 2020.
This initiative will provide possible future pathways for sustainable and effective exploitation of marine genetic resources for human health and well-being. The biological diversity of our Oceans is directly linked to the chemical diversity, and both must be protected in order to keep the environments, the species and the chemicals they contain.
A round table discussion was held for future perspectives and new projects.
Sea4Us was represented by our co-founder and CFO, Nuno Leitão, and by our researcher, Silvia Lino, who made a presentation on the Sea4Us’s research, namely related to the new chronic pain analgesic that is under development at the Sea4Us’s Laboratories.

Expresso interviewed Sea4Us while covering the stories of 20 companies that received funds from the European Programme 2020 (in our case, Portugal2020). At the time, they interviewed Pedro Lima – Sea4Us CSO -, André Bastos and Joana Serrão – two of Sea4Us scientific researchers.
Those who suffer from chronic pain know the extent of the ordeal in which they live. But the answer may lie in the sea. More specifically on the Portuguese coast. Sea4us, a biotechnology company created in 2013, is developing a new painkiller for the treatment of chronic pain using active ingredients for drugs from marine organisms of the portuguese coastline. It is the wealth of the sea, still poorly explored, that guides the company in the identification and selection of marine specimens with potential, within an enormous biodiversity. Pedro Lima, one of the company’s researchers, says the team spends “many hours with bottles, often just watching marine life. And this is always the first step.”
